"Two Pioneers"

Published

This 1877 short story depicts a voyageur town on the Missouri River, and the strange alliance during a winter of sickness between two of its non-voyageur residents: Father De Smet, a Catholic priest, and Mademoiselle Ninon, a woman of easy virtue. The light and humorous story grows rather sad by the end, but never loses hope.
